FAULTY VENT FAN CAUSES DAMAGE TO NAIL SALON
PULLMAN—Pullman firefighters extinguished small blaze at the Hi Tek Nails and Waxing shop in downtown Pullman Wednesday evening that caused between $3,000 and $5,000 damage to the business.
Firefighters responded to the shop at 114 North Grand Ave. around 9 pm and when they first arrived saw smoke coming from the building. Pullman police officers evacuated people from the business and from the two immediate neighbors--Café Moro and the RTOP Theater.
Employees told firefighters that they saw sparks and smoke coming from the ceiling vent fan which turned out to be the source of the fire. The fire was quickly extinguished and then firefighters spent time making sure the fire had not spread any further in the ceiling area.
Deputy fire marshal Tony Nuttman said the fire was started when the fan motor seized up and started sparking. In addition to the fan, there was damage to some wood around the fan and the ceiling material. The owner of the business said he planned to call in an electrician in the morning before his business could resume.
