SEVEN CANDIDATES TO BE INTERVIEWED FOR PULLMAN POLICE CHIEF 5/4/2010

PULLMAN—Mayor Glenn Johnson announced that the top seven candidates for Pullman police chief will be in the city Wednesday, May 12, for a series of interviews.

The candidates will be interviewing for a position held by William “Ted” Weatherly, who has served Pullman as chief for the past 30 years.  “We know Ted will be a tough person to replace,” Johnson said.  “He has been a dedicated public servant and a man of integrity. We have deeply appreciated his leadership for the past three decades.”  Weatherly, who has been in law enforcement for 46 years, will officially step down as police chief on June 30th.

Individuals selected to interview are (in alphabetical order): David W. Allison, Captain with the Roseville, Calif. Police Dept; David J. Duke, Asst. Police Chief, Moscow, Idaho; Daniel Garcia, Undersheriff, Yakima County (Wash.) Sheriff’s Office; Gary L. Jenkins, Captain, Claremont (Calif.) Police Dept.; Robert J. Mock, Asst. Chief with the Houston (Texas) Independent School District and former homicide commander with the Houston Police Dept.; Robert L. Spinks, Chief of Police, Sequim (Wash) Police Dept.; and Christian L. Tennant, Commander, Pullman Police Dept.

Johnson said the candidates will have a full day in Pullman alternating between the oral interview by a panel of nine individuals, time with officers from the police department, a tour of the city with Chief Weatherly, a luncheon and a public open house at 5 pm Wednesday in the city council chambers.

The candidates selected for the interviews came from an initial application pool of over 20 candidates from all over the country.  A group of six individuals—four community members and two high ranking law enforcement officers—went through the applications and recommended interviews for the seven who will be in Pullman next week.

Johnson said he was very grateful for the dedication shown by the screening committee and for the nine people who will be on the interview panel next week.  That panel will include two city council members, one representative from the Associated Students of Washington State University (ASWSU), three members of the community including a director with the multicultural student services, two chiefs of police, and the city supervisor.  The mayor will attend all the interviews but will be an ex officio member.
